Compliance might not be the first career path you hear about at university – but it’s one of the most influential. At NFU Mutual, Group Compliance plays a vital role in protecting our customers, our reputation and the long-term sustainability of the business. We make sure we operate within the law, but more importantly, we help shape decisions that lead to good customer outcomes. We don’t just monitor the business – we partner with it, challenge it and help it do the right thing.
During your 8-week internship, you’ll gain exposure to how regulation, risk and governance influence real business decisions. You’ll see how we interpret regulatory change, assess risk, strengthen controls and support colleagues across the organisation to act with integrity and confidence. You won’t just observe – you’ll contribute. You might research emerging regulatory themes, support review and assurance activity, explore how new technologies such as AI could enhance our approach, or help shape communications that guide business behaviour. You’ll gain first-hand experience of how compliance activity connects to commercial objectives and customer trust.
By the end of the programme, you’ll have delivered a tangible piece of work you can genuinely talk about in future interviews – something you’ve owned, developed and refined through feedback, with a clear understanding of the impact it has on the wider organisation.
You don’t need previous insurance or compliance experience to apply. We’re far more interested in your potential. Any kind of work experience is valuable, whether that’s a part-time role in retail or hospitality, an office-based placement, volunteering, or involvement in a society or team. If you’ve had to communicate clearly, manage your time, balance responsibilities or take ownership of a task, you’ll already have started building skills that matter in this role.
You’ll bring curiosity, a willingness to learn and the confidence to engage with people across different teams. You’ll be comfortable using digital tools, open to feedback and ready to take initiative when you spot something that could be improved.
We’re particularly looking for:
Teamwork and collaboration – you’ll work closely with colleagues across different teams, contributing to discussions and supporting shared objectives that protect customers and the business.
Communication – you’ll need to explain ideas clearly, ask thoughtful questions and contribute confidently in meetings, whether you’re discussing regulatory developments or presenting your project work.
Initiative and proactivity – we value interns who take ownership, look for ways to add value and are willing to explore ideas independently rather than waiting to be directed.
Interpersonal skills – building strong working relationships is key in Compliance. You’ll engage with people at different levels of the organisation and help influence positive behaviours.
Self-management and motivation – you’ll be trusted with real responsibility, so being organised, managing your time effectively and staying motivated is essential.
Innovation and creativity – whether exploring how technology or AI could support compliance activity, or thinking differently about how we communicate regulatory change, we encourage fresh perspectives and new ideas.
